Excellent conversation between Mary (Bobbie) Woodward and her friend of many years, Barbara Lusk recorded at the Society’s AGM held in March earlier this year at the Arataki Centre.  Mary, granddaughter of John Bethell, (Bethell’s Beach) Te Henga, talks about her recently published memoir ” ‘Shimmersea’ What Ever happened to Miss New Zealand 1949?”.
Mary discusses her life as Miss New Zealand and remembers her childhood holidaying at Te Henga which she calls ‘the landscape of her heart’. She mentions her deep commitment to the environment and recalls being at the formation of the Society and her new commitment to peace and non-violence.

The interview was professionally recorded for the Waitakere Ranges Protection Society’s Oral History collection by Davyd Hodge and is also lodged with the Auckland Library, West Research.
